President Tomaso Cognolato and Fabio Bucchioni, Chair of Assiterminal’s Europe Commission, attended yesterday’s event “The EU Ports Strategy: A Route to Global Leadership for Europe’s Hub Ports by 2035”, organised by FEPORT and hosted at the European Parliament by MEP Matteo Ricci, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Transport and Tourism.
The discussion, moderated by FEPORT Secretary General Lamia Kerdjoudj, brought together representatives of the European Commission – in particular DG CLIMA, DG HOME and DG ENV – as well as the European Economic and Social Committee and the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF). Closing remarks were delivered by MEP Sérgio Gonçalves, Rapporteur on the European Parliament’s own-initiative report on the EU Ports Strategy.
Representatives of leading companies operating European terminals and members of FEPORT had the opportunity to engage with institutional representatives and experts on the key challenges reshaping the European port sector.
At the heart of the discussion was the EU Ports Strategy, which will define the framework for the competitiveness, resilience and security of European ports in the years ahead.
The debate also addressed the ongoing review of the EU ETS, including the issue of the lack of an exemption for large islands, the European Commission’s proposal for a new Public Procurement Act, the European military mobility package, the upskilling and reskilling of workers, and the Cyber Security Act.
During the event, FEPORT drew particular attention to the implications of the maritime ETS for the competitiveness of European ports, highlighting the importance of ensuring that revenues generated by the system are also used to support port investments in decarbonisation.
The discussion reaffirmed the central role of ports and terminals in EU policies and the need to combine decarbonisation and security objectives with safeguarding the competitiveness of the European port system.
